TWELVE STEPS
~
Twelve-step methods have been adopted to address a wide range of substance-abuse and dependency problems. Over 200 self-help organizations ~ often known as fellowships ~ with a worldwide membership of millions ~ now employ twelve-step principles for recovery.
~
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-step_program
~
TWELVE STEPS
~
These are the original Twelve Steps as published by
Alcoholics Anonymous:
~
* ~ We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
* ~ Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
* ~ Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
* ~ Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
* ~ Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
* ~ Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
* ~ Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
* ~ Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
* ~ Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
* ~ Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
* ~ Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
* ~ Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
~
In some cases, where other twelve-step groups have adapted the AA steps as guiding principles, they have been altered to emphasize principles important to those particular fellowships, and to remove gender-biased language.

RSD

Posted in RSD tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , at 1:44 am by PCOSLady

PCOS Lady:
Many PCOS ladies are being dx’d with RSD too!
~
RSD
~
http://arthritis.about.com/od/rsd/a/rsd.htm
~
RSD – What Is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome?
Also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
~
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is referred to by several other names:
~
~ Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome – RSDS
~ Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
~ Shoulder-Hand Syndrome
~ Causalgia
~ Sudeck’s Atrophy
~
The syndrome is as complicated as its nomenclature.
~
What Causes RSD?
~
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), RSD is “a chronic pain condition that is believed to be the result of dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous systems.”
~
According to MedicineNet, RSD involves “irritation and abnormal excitation of nervous tissue, leading to abnormal impulses along nerves that affect blood vessels and skin.”
~
Animal studies indicate that norepinephrine, a catecholamine released from sympathetic nerves, acquires the capacity to activate pain pathways after tissue or nerve injury, resulting in RSD.
~
Another theory suggests RSD which follows an injury is caused by triggering an immune response and symptoms associated with inflammation (redness, warmth, swelling).
~
RSD is not thought to have a single cause, but rather multiple causes producing similar symptoms.
~
Celebrity Announces Battle With RSD
~
American Idol judge and celebrity Paula Abdul announced that following a 25 year battle with chronic pain, precipitated by a cheerleading accident when she was 17 years old, she has been diagnosed with RSD.
~
The media attention given to Abdul’s medical struggle has placed RSD on front pages and magazine covers. RSD is among the 100 types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases. It is estimated that between 500,000 and 750,000 people have RSD.
~
http://arthritis.about.com/od/diseasesandconditions/Types_of_Arthritis_Rheumatic_Diseases_Related_Conditions.htm
~ 100 Types of Arthritis – Rheumatic Diseases
~
What Are The Symptoms Of RSD?
~
RSD usually affects one of the extremities (arms, legs, hands, or feet). The primary symptom of RSD is intense, continuous pain.
~
According to NINDS, the list of symptoms includes:
~
~ burning pain
~ increased skin sensitivity
~ skin temperature changes (warmer or cooler than opposing extremity)
~ skin color changes (blotchy, purple, pale, red)
~ skin texture changes (shiny, thin, sweaty)
~ changes in nail and hair growth patterns
~ stiffness and swelling in affected joints
~ decreased ability to move affected extremity
~
Pain can spread to a wider area (i.e. from finger to entire arm) and can spread to the opposite extremity (i.e. from left arm to right arm). Emotional stress can cause symptoms to worsen.
~
Some experts suggest there are three stages of RSD, during which progressive changes occur in the skin, muscles, joints, ligaments, and bones of the affected area. The progression has not been confirmed by clinical studies though.
~
Stages of RSD
~
Stage 1
~
~ lasts 1 to 3 months
~ severe, burning pain
~ muscle spasm
~ joint stiffness
~ rapid hair growth
~ skin color and temperature changes
~
Stage 2
~
~ lasts from 3 to 6 months
~ pain which becomes more intense
~ swelling
~ decreased hair growth
~ nails which are cracked, brittle, grooved, spotty
~ softened bones
~ stiff joints
~ weak muscle tone
~
Stage 3
~
~ irreversible changes to skin and bone
~ pain is continuous
~ muscle atrophy
~ severe limited mobility
~ contractions of muscles and tendons (limbs may be twisted)
~
What Triggers RSD?
~

There can be numerous triggers for RSD including:

~
~ injury or trauma
~ surgery
~ degenerative arthritis of the neck
~ shoulder problems
~ heart disease
~ stroke
~ diabetes
~ cancer
~ infection
~ brain diseases
~ thyroid disorders
~ carpal tunnel
~ shingles
~ certain medications
~
In an estimated one-third of patients with RSD, there is no associated trigger.
~
How Is RSD Diagnosed?
~
A patient’s clinical history (signs and symptoms) are the major factor in diagnosing RSD. The diagnosis is made difficult because many of the symptoms overlap with other conditions.
~
There is no specific blood test or other diagnostic test for RSD. X-rays can show thinning of bones (osteoporosis). Nuclear bone scans can show characteristic uptake patterns which help diagnose RSD.
~
How Is RSD Treated?
~
Treatment focuses on relieving painful symptoms associated with RSD. Treatment can include:
~
~ physical therapy and exercise
~ psychotherapy to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression
~ sympathetic nerve blocks
~ surgery including sympathectomy (considered controversial)
~ spinal cord stimulation
~ intrathecal drug pumps
~ medications including:
.. ~ topical analgesics
.. ~ anti-seizure drugs
.. ~ antidepressants
.. ~ corticosteroids
.. ~ opioids

Is Enbrel Commonly Used To Treat RSD?
~
Enbrel is among the TNF blockers used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. When asked if it is used to also treat RSD, rheumatologist Scott Zashin M.D. commented, “Enbrel is not FDA approved to treat RSD. Studies have shown some benefit in treating nerve inflammation. Since RSD is felt to have a neurological component, it might be beneficial and worth a try. This condition may sometimes be difficult to treat with standard therapies.”

1 poster: Do any of you know if casein intolerance can cause villous atrophy??
~
2nd poster:
Sun Mar 06, 2011
Yes, it definitely can, though most GI specialists are not likely to be aware of this. This is also one of the reasons why most celiacs never return to normal colonic mucosal histoligy, (IOW, they continue to show villus atrophy, on biopsies), despite rigidly following a GF diet, because they continue to ingest dairy products.
~
Quote:
Cow dairy can cause an enteropathy similar to celiac disease. It is called Bovine Beta Casein Enteropathy. It acts like celiac disease, causing inflammation leading to villous blunting. The milk protein elicits the antibody reaction just like gluten does in celiac disease.

The following is a quote from a long article about this issue from the website of John B. Symes, D.V.M. (aka Dogtor J ). Dr. Symes is a veterinarian, but he has done more research about food-related sensitivities, and he is far more knowledgeable about them, then more than 99% of the human GI specialists in the world.
~
Quote:
Here is the important thing. The other “foods’ that coat (and subsequently damage) the intestinal villi…and the only ones that do this along with casein…are gluten, soy, and corn. These are the big four or the “four horsemen of the apocalypse” as I now like to call them. And it is man and animals against casein, gluten, soy, and corn as the title implies. The strongest evidence of their potential harm is found in the fact that all of these food elements are used to make adhesives…powerful adhesives. Casein, gluten and soy are the strongest, stickiest, and most powerfully antigenic glycoproteins while corn is a slightly less powerful but nonetheless very significant player (especially the corn that we have recently created). They put cars together with the super-glues manufactured from soy protein. They make waterproof industrial adhesives from casein and gluten that are used for numerous purposes ranging from the glue on stamps and envelopes to putting metal together. But, the “best” they can do with corn glues is to put cardboard boxes together. So, we see why the FDA and veterinary lists of food allergens are what they are: in order, the (primary) food allergens are cow’s milk, wheat, soy, and corn.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors
~
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar. Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both.
~
To understand diabetes, it is important to first understand the normal process by which food is broken down and used by the body for energy. Several things happen when food is digested:
~ A sugar called glucose enters the bloodstream. Glucose is a source of fuel for the body.
~ An organ called the pancreas makes insulin. The role of insulin is to move glucose from the bloodstream into muscle, fat, and liver cells, where it can be used as fuel.
~
People with diabetes have high blood sugar because their body cannot move sugar into fat, liver, and muscle cells to be stored for energy. This is because either:
~
~ Their pancreas does not make enough insulin
~ Their cells do not respond to insulin normally
~ Both of the above
~
There are three major types of diabetes. The causes and risk factors are different for each type:
~
~ Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age, but it is most often diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults. In this disease, the body makes little or no insulin. Daily injections of insulin are needed. The exact cause is unknown.
~ Type 2 diabetes makes up most of diabetes cases. It most often occurs in adulthood, but teens and young adults are now being diagnosed with it because of high obesity rates. Many people with type 2 diabetes do not know they have it.
~ Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that develops at any time during pregnancy in a woman who does not have diabetes.
~
Diabetes affects more than 20 million Americans. Over 40 million Americans have pre-diabetes (early type 2 diabetes).
~
Symptoms
~
High blood sugar levels can cause several symptoms, including:
~
~ Blurry vision
~ Excess thirst
~ Fatigue
~ Frequent urination
~ Hunger
~ Weight loss
~
Because type 2 diabetes develops slowly, some people with high blood sugar have no symptoms.
~
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes develop over a short period of time. People may be very sick by the time they are diagnosed.
~
Signs and tests
~
A urine analysis may be used to look for high blood sugar. However, a urine test alone does not diagnose diabetes.
~
Your health care provider may suspect that you have diabetes if your blood sugar level is higher than 200 mg/dL. To confirm the diagnosis, one or more of the following tests must be done.
~
Blood tests:
~ Fasting blood glucose level — diabetes is diagnosed if it is higher than 126 mg/dL twice. Levels between 100 and 126 mg/dL are called impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes. These levels are risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
~
~ Hemoglobin A1c test —
~ Normal: Less than 5.7%
~ Pre-diabetes: 5.7% – 6.4%
~ Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
~
~ Oral glucose tolerance test — diabetes is diagnosed if glucose level is higher than 200 mg/dL after 2 hours. (This test is used more often for type 2 diabetes.)
~
Screening for type 2 diabetes in people who have no symptoms is recommended for:
~
~ Overweight children who have other risk factors for diabetes, starting at age 10 and repeated every 2 years
~ Overweight adults (BMI greater than 25) who have other risk factors
~ Adults over age 45, repeated every 3 years

~ Dr. Flechas is a nationally known speaker on the diagnosis and successful treatment of Fibromyalgia, one of the 10 most frequently misdiagnosed syndromes in North America today. Dr. Flechas is considered to have broken a paradigm in effectively treating Fibromyalgia pain without the use of anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, or narcotic medications. His treatment involves the use of Nitroglycerine to increase Nitric Oxide, a natural pain killer found in the body. He has recently found the use of essential oils from plants to decrease the pain of FMS.
~
Dr. Flechas is a family practitioner, specializing in the treatment of fibromyalgia and chronic pain. With over 700 fibromyalgia patients, he has a wealth of information to share.
~
Dr. Jorge Flechas has developed an effective protocol for treatment of Fibromyalgia Syndrome.
~
THE STATISTICS:
~
Although this statistic may be significantly understated due to the frequent misdiagnosis of this debilitating syndrome, Fibromyalgia afflicts between two and four percent of the population in the United States today. Fibromyalgia appears to be most frequently present in women with a ratio of 20 women to every 1 man. It is especially prevalent among those women in the age range of 35 to 55. The average age of first onset is 45. It has been diagnosed in teenagers and in children as young as seven years of age.

~
THE HISTORY:
~
FMS has been discussed in the medical literature for many years. It was first described by William Balfour, a surgeon at the University of Edinburgh, in 1816. Our medical alertness to this syndrome is on the rise, and as a consequence more and more patients are being diagnosed in today’s medical environment. It is of interest to note that health care practitioners in China have no recorded incidence of Fibromyalgia, nor does it appear in third world health clinics as predominantly as it does in Western nations such as the United States.

~
JORGE FLECHAS, M.D., M.P.H. born in Puerto Rico, received his Medical Doctorate Degree and Masters in Public Health at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida.
~
Dr. Flechas over the years has published articles in the fields of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome. Lately, he has been involved in research in the field of iodine deficiency, which has been associated with fibrocystic breast disease, ovarian cysts, breast cancer, thyroid goiter and hypothyroidism. Recent work in the field of iodine deficiency has shown that replacement therapy decreases the risk of breast cancer and promotes the reversal of fibrocystic breast disease.
~
It has been thought that iodine deficiency only manifests as hypothyroidism. Work done by many researchers over the last few years has shown that iodine is utilized by many different sections of the body. Twenty percent of all of the iodine sits in the human skin. A lack of iodine in the skin manifests as very dry skin and skin that does not sweat when an individual becomes hot. In newborn children iodine is responsible for the development of the babies’ I.Q. Recent research shows iodine deficiency is felt to be the source of attention deficit disorder in children.
~
Iodine is utilized by every hormone receptor in the body. The absence of iodine causes a hormonal dysfunction that can be seen with practically every hormone inside the body. Dr. Flechas has recently been able to show that patients with insulin resistant diabetes have a partial to full remission of their illness in the presence of taking iodine. Iodine deficiency is also felt to be the source of ovarian cysts. With iodine replacement therapy the cysts disappear and women have stopped having ovarian cysts.
~
Dr. Flechas with the help of Dr. Guy Abraham, GYN/Endocrinologist from Torrance, California has been able to develop an iodine testing laboratory. Dr. Flechas is now the Director of that laboratory. Iodine deficiency can now be measured using the Iodine Loading Test. Kits for doing this testing can be ordered from 1-877-900-5556. The test is available through FFP Laboratories. Dr. Flechas can be reached at his Flechas Family Practice in Henderson, North Carolina by phone 828-684-3233, fax 828-684-3253. and website www.helpmythyroid.com. Articles concerning iodine deficiency have been published and are available via his website.

~
In 1776, Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, foretold a grim scenario that has now taken shape right before our eyes. He said:
~
“Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution the time will come when medicine will organize itself into an undercover dictatorship. To restrict the art of healing to doctors and deny equal privileges to others will constitute the Bastille of medical science. All such laws are un-American and despotic.”
~
Now, in 2012, we are very much facing this reality, as we live in an era where our medical freedom is increasingly under attack, and “healing” has been replaced with “treating” disease, most often with toxic chemicals and surgery. This drug-driven medical paradigm not only depends on the sacrifice and, some might say, torture, of animals in medical research, but also in many ways uses humans as sacrificial lambs.
~
Modern Medical Care is a Leading Cause of Death

There were nearly 4.6 million drug-related visits to emergency roomsi in the United States in 2009, with more than half due to adverse reactions to prescription medications – most of which were being taken exactly as prescribed…

~ We live in an era where our medical freedom is increasingly under attack, and “healing” has been replaced with “treating” disease, most often with toxic chemicals and surgery
~
~ Conventional medical care is a leading cause of death, often causing humans to sacrifice their health instead of improving it
~
~ The drug-based medical model depends on belief that your body needs chemicals to stay well; if we all embraced our bodies’ innate healing potential, the drug-based, disease-treatment medical system would crumble
~
~ Until real systemic change takes place, your best health strategy is to employ and maintain a naturally healthy lifestyle that will optimize your body’s innate healing abilities and minimize your need for drugs, surgery and conventional medical care
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
NOTE:
~
You may be tempted to point your finger at your physician. After all, he or she is on the “front lines” doing most of the prescribing and advising. But whether or not doctors succeed in upholding the Hippocratic Oath — the promise to Do No Harm — is not always entirely in their own hands.
~
The conventional medical system is simply not designed to give them that freedom. It’s VITAL that you understand that regardless of their personal opinions, many times they’re simply not allowed to offer you any other alternatives than what the “standard protocol” demands. As written on GreenMedInfo.com
~
As the article so eloquently points out, none of these arguments hold up, and most are based on medical and pharmaceutical industry propaganda. If they were TRULY concerned about patient care and safety, they would not be targeting natural medicine, which has an incredibly low incidence of adverse consequences and proven successes, but instead going after their own allopathic medical practices that are leaving a trail of death and destruction.
~
Other medical associations whose claims that they exist for the betterment of public health are entirely questionable include the following:
~
~ American Dental Association (ADA)
~ American Cancer Society (ACS)
~ National Cancer Institute (NCI)
~ American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

~
Water therapy, hydro therapy, is just now being known to do wonders!
~ I know it works from my days in the horse industry… Leg injuries heal faster without added pressure…
~
Back injuries i know 1st hand a chiropractor may be the only right choice… Had a physical therapist place owner do major damage to my back… Took the chiropractor two and a half hours to get the three spasms and damage undone!
* That scenario made me “WAKE UP” to alternative healing, etc…
~ Some back problems are alright with physical therapy… Depends on each person and what is wrong…
~
I am not one to poison my body with drugs, etc… Antibiotics for infections i will take the full 7 to 10 days… Today i know to follow them up with a yeast cleanse after. Then every 3 years on a regular basis or if i need to!
~
Over medicating is a huge problem today! Doctors, drug companies, etc… are getting wealthy as you get poorer over it all! Your insurance companies are reaping monies as well…
~
I ask you to sit down with your pharmacist and go over all your meds, prescription and over the counter… They are trained on drugs, the actions, reactions and interactions… Your doctors are not!
~
www.drugs.com
~ Drugs can be looked up here before you take them as well… Very informative about all drugs…
~
