~ Dr. Flechas is a nationally known speaker on the diagnosis and successful treatment of Fibromyalgia, one of the 10 most frequently misdiagnosed syndromes in North America today. Dr. Flechas is considered to have broken a paradigm in effectively treating Fibromyalgia pain without the use of anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, or narcotic medications. His treatment involves the use of Nitroglycerine to increase Nitric Oxide, a natural pain killer found in the body. He has recently found the use of essential oils from plants to decrease the pain of FMS.
~
Dr. Flechas is a family practitioner, specializing in the treatment of fibromyalgia and chronic pain. With over 700 fibromyalgia patients, he has a wealth of information to share.
~
Dr. Jorge Flechas has developed an effective protocol for treatment of Fibromyalgia Syndrome.
~
THE STATISTICS:
~
Although this statistic may be significantly understated due to the frequent misdiagnosis of this debilitating syndrome, Fibromyalgia afflicts between two and four percent of the population in the United States today. Fibromyalgia appears to be most frequently present in women with a ratio of 20 women to every 1 man. It is especially prevalent among those women in the age range of 35 to 55. The average age of first onset is 45. It has been diagnosed in teenagers and in children as young as seven years of age.

FIBROMYALGIA SYMPTOMS:
~
~ Muscle pain – Hurting All Over
~ Fatigue
~ “Tender Points” in specific areas when pressure is applied
~ Sleep Disturbance
~ Recurring Headache
~ Morning Stiffness
~ Memory Problems
~
For a more comprehensive review of the diagnostic criteria associated with FMS, Please visit the website of the National Fibromyalgia Research Association at the http://www.nfra.net
~
THE HISTORY:
~
FMS has been discussed in the medical literature for many years. It was first described by William Balfour, a surgeon at the University of Edinburgh, in 1816. Our medical alertness to this syndrome is on the rise, and as a consequence more and more patients are being diagnosed in today’s medical environment. It is of interest to note that health care practitioners in China have no recorded incidence of Fibromyalgia, nor does it appear in third world health clinics as predominantly as it does in Western nations such as the United States.

~
JORGE FLECHAS, M.D., M.P.H. born in Puerto Rico, received his Medical Doctorate Degree and Masters in Public Health at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida.
~
Dr. Flechas over the years has published articles in the fields of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome. Lately, he has been involved in research in the field of iodine deficiency, which has been associated with fibrocystic breast disease, ovarian cysts, breast cancer, thyroid goiter and hypothyroidism. Recent work in the field of iodine deficiency has shown that replacement therapy decreases the risk of breast cancer and promotes the reversal of fibrocystic breast disease.
~
It has been thought that iodine deficiency only manifests as hypothyroidism. Work done by many researchers over the last few years has shown that iodine is utilized by many different sections of the body. Twenty percent of all of the iodine sits in the human skin. A lack of iodine in the skin manifests as very dry skin and skin that does not sweat when an individual becomes hot. In newborn children iodine is responsible for the development of the babies’ I.Q. Recent research shows iodine deficiency is felt to be the source of attention deficit disorder in children.
~
Iodine is utilized by every hormone receptor in the body. The absence of iodine causes a hormonal dysfunction that can be seen with practically every hormone inside the body. Dr. Flechas has recently been able to show that patients with insulin resistant diabetes have a partial to full remission of their illness in the presence of taking iodine. Iodine deficiency is also felt to be the source of ovarian cysts. With iodine replacement therapy the cysts disappear and women have stopped having ovarian cysts.
~
Dr. Flechas with the help of Dr. Guy Abraham, GYN/Endocrinologist from Torrance, California has been able to develop an iodine testing laboratory. Dr. Flechas is now the Director of that laboratory. Iodine deficiency can now be measured using the Iodine Loading Test. Kits for doing this testing can be ordered from 1-877-900-5556. The test is available through FFP Laboratories. Dr. Flechas can be reached at his Flechas Family Practice in Henderson, North Carolina by phone 828-684-3233, fax 828-684-3253. and website www.helpmythyroid.com. Articles concerning iodine deficiency have been published and are available via his website.

Symptoms:
~
~ anemia – anemia means a reduced number of red blood cells in the blood and is revealed on screening blood work as a reduced number of red blood cells (reduced RBC count and/or reduced hematocrit) In this type of anemia, the red blood cells are often microcytic (meaning the cells are smaller, which shows on bloodwork as a reduced “MCV”) and/or hypo chromic (meaning the cells have low hemoglobin content per cell, which shows on bloodwork as a low “MCHC” or “MCH”) Often the MCV and MCH/MCHC values begin to fall before the actual anemia begins to develop; these changes represent the body’s final attempts to continue producing red blood cells without an adequate supply of iron.
