RLS – Restless Leg Syndrome

Posted in RLS tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 9:40 pm by PCOSLady

Restles Leg Syndrome
~ RLS ~

~
Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease (WED), is a disruptive neurologic disorder that seriously affects 2-3% of the adult population. RLS results in an irresistible urge to move the legs which is often accompanied by unusual or unpleasant sensations in the legs that may be described as creeping, tugging, or pulling. Because RLS most often occurs in the evening, it can severely disrupt sleep and reduce quality of life.
~
If you have restless legs syndrome (RLS), you are not alone. Up to 10% of the U.S. population may have RLS. Many people have a mild form of the disorder, but RLS severely affects the lives of millions of individuals. Spend some time at our links to the left discovering how the RLS Foundation can help you in your own personal RLS journey.
~
PCOS Lady:
RLS is a symptom listed in many medical conditions… I suggest joining the community board with the RLS Foundation… Learn more about RLS and what others are doing and trying to help their conditions…
~ Have your mineral levels checked!
~ PCOS ladies may experience RLS as well…Research has it documented…
~
RLS is also said to feel like your legs are running in place while sitting or standing then you feel tired after… Relief is when you follow through and run in place sitting down and feel tired for awhile… The sensation goes away til next time…

~
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
~
Restless leg syndrome (RLS) occurs most often in middle-aged and older adults. Stress makes it worse. The cause is not known in most patients.
~
RLS may occur more often in patients with:
~
~ Chronic kidney disease
~ Diabetes
~ Iron deficiency
~ Parkinson’s disease
~ Peripheral neuropathy
~ Pregnancy
~ Use of certain medications such as caffeine, calcium channel blockers, lithium, or neuroleptics
~ Withdrawal from sedatives
~
RLS is commonly passed down in families. This may be a factor when symptoms start at a younger age. The abnormal gene has not yet been identified.
~

~ National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine … RLS is a disorder in which there is an urge or need to move the legs to stop unpleasant sensations. Symptoms: RLS leads to sensations in the lower legs between the knee and ankle.

Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Posted in Fibromyalgia tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 11:18 pm by PCOSLady

PCOS Lady:
About.com is highly informative on numerous topics…
Here is a longer list of Fibro symptoms from the author of a book on it…
~
http://thyroid.about.com/cs/fibromyalgiacfs/a/fibrothyroid.htm

~
Fibromyalgia Symptoms
~
by Mary J. Shomon
~
A significant percentage of the estimated 20 million people with hypothyroidism end up also being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, an important connection discussed in my new book Living Well With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.
~
Fibromyalgia affects as many as 8 million people in the U.S., occurring mainly in women of childbearing age. Symptoms usually arise between the ages of 20-55 years, but the condition also may be diagnosed in childhood. Among the entire population, it’s estimated that as many as 3-6% of the general population, including children, meet the criteria for diagnosis of fibromyalgia. This would make fibromyalgia over twice as common as rheumatoid arthritis. In general, fibromyalgia is strikes women seven times more often than men, according to a 1998 National Institutes of Health report.
~
Fibromyalgia Symptoms
~
Symptoms of Fibromyalgia typically include:
~
~ Feeling of pain, burning, aching, and soreness in the body
~ Headaches, tenderness of the scalp, pain in the back of the skull
~ Pain in the neck, shoulder, shoulder blades and elbows
~ Pain in hips, top of buttocks, outside the lower hip, below buttocks, and the pelvis
~ Pain in the knees and kneecap area
~ Fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, waking up tired, morning stiffness
~ Insomnia, frequent waking, difficulty falling asleep, or falling asleep immediately
~ Raynaud’s phenomenon (where your hands feel cold, numb, or turn blue, when exposed to temperature changes)
~ Irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea and constipation, bloating, cramping
~ Balance problems
~ Neurally mediated hypotension — when you stand up, your blood pressure drops, which can make you feel faint, dizzy, nauseous, your heart rate drops, and you can even pass out
~ Balance problems
~ Restless leg syndrome
~ Sense of tissues feeling swollen
~ Numbness, tingling and feeling of cold in the hands and feet
~ Chest pain, palpitations
~ Shortness of breath
~ Painful periods
~ Anxiety, depression and “fibrofog” — the term used to describe the confusion and forgetfulness, inability to concentrate and difficulty recalling simple words and numbers, and transposing words and numbers
~ Frequent urination
~ Muscle twitching
~ Dry mouth

Magnesium (the good and deficiencies)

Posted in MINERALS tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 10:30 pm by PCOSLady

Magnesium
~
Why is the calcium magnesium ratio so important?
Because magnesium is the most versatile mineral in your body and participates in over 300 hormone reactions!
~
This workhorse of a mineral plays many roles in your body, including:
~
~ Gives rigidity AND flexibility to your bones
~ Increases bio availability of calcium
~ Regulates and normalizes blood pressure
~ Prevents and reverses kidney stone formation
~ Promotes restful sleep
~ Helps prevent congestive heart failure
~ Eases muscle cramps and spasms
~ Lowers serum cholesterol levels and triglycerides
~ Decreases insulin resistance
~ Can prevent artherosclerosis and stroke
~ End cluster and migraine headaches
~ Enhances circulation
~ Relieves fibromyalgia and chronic pain
~ Treats asthma and emphysema
~ Helps make proteins
~ Encourages proper elimination
~ Prevents osteoporosis
~
Magnesium is a magnificent mineral and imperative for good health.
But a poor diet of processed foods and a stressful lifestyle can lead to mineral deficiencies, including magnesium. If you ARE deficient in magnesium, you may notice a wide range of symptoms.
~
Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms
~
http://bodyecology.com/articles/magnesium_deficiency.php

~ Body Ecology
~
Because magnesium is active in so many different processes in your body, magnesium deficiency symptoms are varied and can include:
~
~ Insomnia
~ Anxiety, hyperactivity, restlessness
~ Constipation
~ Muscle spasms, twitches, soreness (RLS, Charlie Horses)
~ Difficulty swallowing
~ Back aches
~ Headaches
~ Chest tightness and difficulty breathing
~ Heart palpitations
~ High blood pressure
~ Extreme fatigue
~ Osteoporosis
~
Any of these common symptoms may indicate that you need more magnesium in your diet, but this simple mineral can help eliminate these symptoms and enhance your health.

~ Green Med Info .. Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms and Diagnosis …
~ Magnesium deficiency is often misdiagnosed because it does not show up in blood tests – only 1% of the body’s magnesium is stored in the blood.
~ Most doctors and laboratories don’t even include magnesium status in routine blood tests.
~ Thus, most doctors don’t know when their patients are deficient in magnesium, even though studies show that the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium.
