RISK FACTORS ~ May Lead To Iodine Deficiency

~

Following is a list of potential risk factors that may lead to iodine deficiency:

  1. Low dietary iodine
  2. Selenium deficiency
  3. Pregnancy
  4. Exposure to radiation
  5. Increased intake/plasma levels of goitrogens, such as calcium
  6. Gender (higher occurrence in women)
  7. Smoking tobacco
  8. Alcohol (reduced prevalence in users)
  9. Oral contraceptives (reduced prevalence in users)
  10. Perchlorates
  11. Thiocyanates
  12. Age (for different types of iodine deficiency at different ages)

~

In the U.S., the use of iodine has decreased over concerns of overdoses since mid-20th century, and the iodine antagonists bromine, perchlorate and fluoride have become more ubiquitous. In particular, around 1980 the practice of using potassium iodate as dough conditioner in bread and baked goods was gradually replaced by the use of other conditioning agents such as bromide .

~

Nearly 74% of normal, “healthy” adults may no longer consume enough iodine.

You will discover iodine’s vital role in thyroid function and its link to obesity, cognitive impairment, heart disease, psychiatric disorders, and various forms of cancer.

~ Iodine can help ward off breast cancer and fibrocystic breast disease.

The US recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for iodine is 150-290 micrograms (mcg) for adults, while the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine has set the tolerable upper limit at 1,100 mcg.

These guidelines may be inadequate to address certain health conditions.

They were first established as sufficient only to prevent goiter. Daily doses for optimal health of 3,000-6,000 mcg have been used without side effects in studies of people with other iodine deficiency-related health conditions such as polycystic breast disease.

By way of comparison, the average daily Japanese consumption of iodine ranges from 5,280 to 13,800 mcg of iodine, with no harmful effects and a host of benefits. The Japanese experience is shedding new light on the importance of iodine, not only for thyroid health, but on other body functions as well. In particular, compelling evidence is emerging about the role of iodine in maintaining breast health, a major concern for millions of American women.

The Silent Epidemic of Iodine Deficiency

By Nancy Piccone

~

In 2008, researchers concerned about the growing threat of iodine deficiency analyzed 88 samples1 of iodized table salt—the main supply of this critical micronutrient for most people.

~

Less than half of those tested contained amounts of iodine sufficient for optimal health.

~

Coupled with the trend of reduced salt consumption, rates of iodine deficiency are now reaching epidemic levels.

~

In the developed world, iodine deficiency has increased more than fourfold over the past 40 years. Nearly 74% of normal, “healthy” adults may no longer consume enough iodine.

~

In this article, the latest data on this dangerous trend are presented. You will learn of iodine deficiency’s profound impact on overall health. You will discover iodine’s vital role in thyroid function and its link to obesity, cognitive impairment, heart disease, psychiatric disorders, and various forms of cancer.

Endocrine System

Posted in DIABETES, ENDOCTRINE DISORDER tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 8:51 pm by PCOSLady

http://www.endocrineweb.com/conditions

About the Endocrine System
Endocrine Glands and Hormones

The Endocrine System Essentials

The endocrine system is made up of a network of glands.
These glands secrete hormones to regulate many bodily functions, including growth and metabolism.
Endocrine diseases are common and usually occur when glands produce an incorrect amount of hormones.

The endocrine system helps control the following processes and systems:

~ Growth and development
~ Homeostasis (the internal balance of body systems)
~ Metabolism (body energy levels)
~ Reproduction
~ Response to stimuli (stress and/or injury)

The Endocrine Network
The endocrine system completes these tasks through its network of glands, which are small but highly important organs that produce, store, and secrete hormones.

The glands of the endocrine system are:
~ Hypothalamus
~ Pineal Gland
~ Pituitary Gland
~ Thyroid
~ Parathyroid
~ Thymus
~ Adrenal
~ Pancreas
~ Ovaries
~ Testes

These glands produce different types of hormones that evoke a specific response in other cells, tissues, and/or organs located throughout the body. The hormones reach these faraway targets using the blood stream. Like the nervous system, the endocrine system is one of your body’s main communicators. But instead of using nerves to transmit information, the endocrine system uses blood vessels to deliver hormones to cells.

Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)

Posted in WAKE UP FYI tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 4:15 pm by PCOSLady

Story that created my post on BVO:
~
Teen Sarah Kavanagh is making headlines after raising questions about the safety of an ingredient in Gatorade. “TODAY” reports she noticed brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, on the ingredient label. She Googled it and was shocked to find out what it was. In extreme cases, BVO has been found to cause convulsions and heart beat malfunction. Fox News reports Gatorade will release BVO-free versions of the drinks. BVO is banned in other countries, including Japan, India, and parts of Europe.

What is BROMINATED VEGETABLE OIL?
http://whatisthatingredient.com/ingredient.php?id=65
~
Mountain Dew has it!
Gatorade did have it! (Pepsi removed it)
~ ~ ~
http://www.nutrition411.com/education-materials/miscellaneous-topics/item/2306-brominated-vegetable-oil-bvo
~
Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)
~
Manufacturers can legally add brominated vegetable oil (BVO) to citrus-flavored beverages in the United States and Canada in controlled amounts (no more than 15 parts per million (ppm) by weight). However, BVO is banned in more than 100 countries. The US Food and Drug Administration classifies it as “suspect.” In 1990, the United Kingdom banned bromate in bread, and in 1994, Canada did the same. Brazil also recently outlawed bromide in flour products.
~
Bromine is extracted from sea water and is deadly in either liquid or vapor form. Bromines are endocrine disruptors and are part of the halide family of elements, which also includes fluorine, chlorine, and iodine. If you are exposed to a lot of bromine, the body cannot retain iodine as it should. According to some experts, this iodine deficiency causes an increased risk for cancers of the breast, thyroid gland, ovary, and prostate.
~
Symptoms of bromine toxicity
~
Bromine is a central nervous system depressant and can lead to psychological symptoms, such as acute paranoia. It is estimated that no less than 20% of all hospital admissions for acute paranoid schizophrenia between 1920 and 1960 actually were misdiagnosed brominism. Until 1975, bromine was used in sedatives.
~
Other symptoms of bromine toxicity include:
~
~ Skin rashes
~ Severe acne
~ Loss of appetite
~ Stomach pain
~ Fatigue
~ A metallic taste in the mouth
~ Cardiac arrhythmia
~
Where bromine is found
~
Bromine is found in:
~
~ Pesticides
~ Plastics
~ Bakery goods (used in flour as a “dough conditioner” called potassium bromate)
~ Soft drinks (including Mountain Dew®, Gatorade®, Sun Drop®, Squirt®, Fresca®, and other citrus-flavored sodas) in the form of BVO
~ Certain medications, including some inhalers and nasal sprays
~ Toothpastes
~ Mouthwashes
~ Hair dyes
~ Textile dyes
~ Automobiles
~ Fire retardants
~ Hot tub and swimming pool treatments
~
Some companies, such as Pepperidge Farm®, make their products using only unbromated flour.
~
BVO is a vegetable oil which has had its density increased to that of water by combining it with bromine. BVO is used in:
~
~ Soft drinks
~ Citrus-flavored beverages
~ Ice cream
~ Ices
~ Baked goods
~
Soft Drinks and Sports Drinks: Would You Drink Flame Retardant?
~
http://wellnessandequality.com/2012/01/06/before-you-drink-soft-drinks-and-sports-drinks-would-you-drink-flame-retardant/
~
Here are some alternatives to consider:
~
Need your caffeine fix? Brew a cup of organic coffee. (Yes, tea is probably healthier than coffee, but if you’re used to soft drinks, the level of caffeine in coffee will give you a more comparable caffeine kick.)
~
Like the sweet taste of sports drinks? Add a splash of 100% fruit juice to your good old H20.
~
Do you prefer drinks with carbonation? Add carbonated water to your 100% fruit juice.
~
Worried about electrolyte balance? Although electrolyte balance may become important in extreme cases (marathons, ultramarathons, Ironman competitions, etc.), many sports drinks don’t have the appropriate ratio of electrolytes to effect levels of electrolytes anyway. Good news: Your body is designed to balance its own electrolyte levels. In fact, some of the so-called “performance boost” athletes find from sports drinks may come from the brain’s response to the taste of sugar. If you’re an extreme athlete, consult with your coach, but remember, humans got along just fine before Gatorade.
~
Just can’t give up sweetened drinks? At the very least, check the label. Don’t buy drinks with brominated vegetable oil (or BVO) listed as an ingredient. Even better, choose all-natural and organic drink brands.
~
Drinks to Avoid: Mountain Dew, Squirt, Fanta Orange, Sunkist Pineapple, Gatorade Thirst Quencher Orange, Powerade Strawberry Lemonade and Fresca Original Citrus.

HYPERTHYROIDISM vs HYPOTHYROIDISM SYMPTOMS

~
PCOS Lady:
Many PCOS ladies will also have a thyroid issue… I have posted the symptoms and info to help you tell the differences and be better informed…
~
Seeing an endocrinologist is your best choice of doctors. Your doctor may tell you your thyroid was fine after a TSH only. Some people see multiple doctors before being told they have a thyroid problem. You may be misdiagnosed with depression or Diabetes or not diagnosed with anything!
~ Keeping a list of your symptoms will help in getting diagnosed properly…
~ Be sure your doctor addresses all your concerns and symptoms…
~
SYMPTOMS COUNT

~
Your symptoms will show you have a thyroid problem. You may be hyperthyroid or hypothyroidism. Absence of periods leans to Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism.

~ persistent cold sores, boils, or breakouts
~ tingling sensation in wrists and hands that mimics carpal tunnel syndrome
~ memory loss, fuzzy thinking, difficulty following conversation or train of thought
~ slowness or slurring of speech
~
Different sources vary the symptoms lists. Keep in mind that, as with many medical disorders, you may only have a few of the symptoms. And just because you don’t have a hallmark symptom of a disorder doesn’t mean you don’t have it.
~
Many times basic and general tests will not reveal certain problems like thyroid disease, prediabetes. You may need to insist on more detailed, targeted tests, even if you feel you have an excellent doctor.

~

DR JORGE FLECHAS

~
JORGE FLECHAS, M.D., M.P.H. born in Puerto Rico, received his Medical Doctorate Degree and Masters in Public Health at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida.
~
Dr. Flechas over the years has published articles in the fields of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome. Lately, he has been involved in research in the field of iodine deficiency, which has been associated with fibrocystic breast disease, ovarian cysts, breast cancer, thyroid goiter and hypothyroidism. Recent work in the field of iodine deficiency has shown that replacement therapy decreases the risk of breast cancer and promotes the reversal of fibrocystic breast disease.
~
It has been thought that iodine deficiency only manifests as hypothyroidism. Work done by many researchers over the last few years has shown that iodine is utilized by many different sections of the body. Twenty percent of all of the iodine sits in the human skin. A lack of iodine in the skin manifests as very dry skin and skin that does not sweat when an individual becomes hot. In newborn children iodine is responsible for the development of the babies’ I.Q. Recent research shows iodine deficiency is felt to be the source of attention deficit disorder in children.
~
Iodine is utilized by every hormone receptor in the body. The absence of iodine causes a hormonal dysfunction that can be seen with practically every hormone inside the body. Dr. Flechas has recently been able to show that patients with insulin resistant diabetes have a partial to full remission of their illness in the presence of taking iodine. Iodine deficiency is also felt to be the source of ovarian cysts. With iodine replacement therapy the cysts disappear and women have stopped having ovarian cysts.
~
Dr. Flechas with the help of Dr. Guy Abraham, GYN/Endocrinologist from Torrance, California has been able to develop an iodine testing laboratory. Dr. Flechas is now the Director of that laboratory. Iodine deficiency can now be measured using the Iodine Loading Test. Kits for doing this testing can be ordered from 1-877-900-5556. The test is available through FFP Laboratories. Dr. Flechas can be reached at his Flechas Family Practice in Henderson, North Carolina by phone 828-684-3233, fax 828-684-3253. and website www.helpmythyroid.com. Articles concerning iodine deficiency have been published and are available via his website.

Symptoms:
~
~ anemia – anemia means a reduced number of red blood cells in the blood and is revealed on screening blood work as a reduced number of red blood cells (reduced RBC count and/or reduced hematocrit) In this type of anemia, the red blood cells are often microcytic (meaning the cells are smaller, which shows on bloodwork as a reduced “MCV”) and/or hypo chromic (meaning the cells have low hemoglobin content per cell, which shows on bloodwork as a low “MCHC” or “MCH”) Often the MCV and MCH/MCHC values begin to fall before the actual anemia begins to develop; these changes represent the body’s final attempts to continue producing red blood cells without an adequate supply of iron.

~ poor physical endurance
~ excessive sleepiness
~ pale skin of face or hands, pale or bluish fingernails, pale inner eyelids
~ sore, inflamed tongue
~ lightheadedness or dizziness
~ feeling cold, easily chilled
~ irritability
~ depression, unhappiness or withdrawal
~ poor concentration and/or attention span
~ nervousness or fearfulness
~ poor coordination

~ racing heart or heart skipping beats
~ poor appetite
~ poor nails: brittle, thin, flattened, ridged, or spoon-shaped
~ hair loss
~ frequent infections
~ desire to chew ice, sunflower seeds, raw noodles etc. or to eat inedible substances such as paint, dirt, or paper
